Upgrade to Windows 7

All editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista qualify you to buy an upgrade license.

1. Choose your edition of Windows 7
Explore key features and choose the edition that's best for you. Be sure to check the expanded list of extended features in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. System requirements vary for each edition of Windows 7 because some features might require special hardware.

2. See if your PC has what it takes to run Windows 7
In general, if your PC can run Windows Vista it can run Windows 7. To make sure, download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to do a quick check. If you want certain features, such as HomeGroup or Windows Media Center, check to see if your PC has the hardware that's needed.

3. Check which operating system your PC is currently running
How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system.

  • Windows Vista
The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.

  • Windows XP (or any other operating system)
Windows 7 is best experienced on a new PC with the latest hardware, but if your computer meets the minimum specifications, you can install Windows 7 on a PC running Windows XP. Windows 7 must be "custom" installed (also known as a "clean" installation) over Windows XP. Before beginning the installation, you'll need to copy your files and settings to an external drive. After Windows 7 has been installed you will need to re-install all of your programs using the original installation media and then copy over the files and settings you backed up to your external drive. Because Windows 7 requires a custom installation, we strongly recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider.

4 out of 5 stars you do need vista   September 5, 2010
Michael W. Mcclure (Brooklyn,Ct.)
Windows 7 is great and easy to install as lond as you are upgrading from vista. If up grading from XP ther are many step to do.If your not into dumping a system and doing backup for the program then make sure your running vista before buying this product. After loading this you'll wonder why they ever made vista in the first place.Windows 7 works like xp and vista mashed together.fast and much easier to operate.

4 out of 5 stars Works for me!   September 5, 2010

After I did a thorough job of taking care of all incompatible software identified by "Windows 7 Advisor", the installation went smoothly on my Acer (Vista) laptop. The process takes forever with many re-boots but otherwise no problems.

4 out of 5 stars MORE PLUSES THEN MINUSES   September 4, 2010

I had purchased a new HP computer that had Winbdows 7 and although the pc had issues and was returned, I did like Windows 7 while I had it. I had issues with several new pcs so I thought I would purchase the Windows 7 upgrade for my old pc. So far I am happy and feel it has more pluses then minuses. There are several reviews written by more tech savy reviewers so I will concentrate on my view of the good and bad points:

GOOD POINTS

1. Has made my computer run much faster and cut my boot time in half.
2. I love the two windows feature where I can open two programs and have them run side by side. I had a problem getting this to work at first but once mastered, a favorite.
3. When you have several items open under the same program, the tool bar at the bottom allows a preview of them so you can access the one you want with one click instead of opening the program and going through them until you get the one you want. Very cool.
4. Home Group allows you to easily share photos, music, etc. between your home computers.
5. Windows 7 Media Center allows for easy tv viewing and recording but your pc must have a tv tuner to access this feature.

BAD POINTS

1. Does not play well with older programs. Not everything is Windows 7 compatible.
2. My Mp3 player (Creative) needed a new driver installed to work on Windows 7 - this is a work in progress as issues keep popping up which prevent me from connecting my MP3 player and using it the way it was meant like I did on Windows XP.
3. The automatic updates are not always a good thing. After the last update, my screen size shrunk and I had to reset my monitor.

Deciding which version to purchse might take a moment. The Professional version provides for an easier connection to company networks, a back-up to network option, and more importantly, the ability to run certain programs in a Windows XP mode - the $157 price difference was the deciding factor for me. Although in hindsight, the Windows XP mode might have been worth it... Please note that if you purchase Windows 7 software, you receive customer support for the first year but if you purchase a new computer with Windows 7 pre-loaded, there is no support without a fee of $59.99.

I do not regret upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7, although the new configuration involved a learning curve. I have been using it for a few weeks and I am still getting used to it but happy overall. I find myself more comfortable using a computer with Windows XP but Windows 7 is the future and it looks promising.
